We watched The Flash today and it was yummy. Nora and Barry doing a CSI job together, Cisco being lovesick and Caitlin avoiding the truth about her dad.
So plenty of drama and not enough time.
The Flash and his daughter
So last week we got acquinted with Nora aka Excess or XS because, you know, Jessica Parker Kennedy is so tiny. Nora is the future daughter of Barry Allen and Iris West-Allen. She came from the future to stop her father from disappearing into god knows what.
Nora brought back a portable holographic version of the newspaper that has haunted The Flash since season one. But this time she also showed a newspaper dated 25 years later. It showed that The Flash was still missing. She grows up without her dad.
Just like last week, Nora hits it off with her dad and tries to get involved with every aspect of his life. His job, his surrogate dad and as The Flash.
The thing is, that whole daddy / daughter thing was a bit too much. There were too many scenes with the two of them. Barry at CSI hires an intern, we see them watch old training videos of Barry’s failures, we see them do everything together. While we enjoy Excess as a character, sometimes it can also be a little bit too much. And we wished that other characters and plotlines would have been given more attention.

Cisco’s woes was an ok attempt of making his misery look funny. Ralph Dibney and Caitlin help Cisco trying to get over his break up with Gypsy. They used a list that was written by Ralph and we really hoped that Cisco’s makeover would include having him cut off his hair. But we guess that that is a step too far.
But every scene just reminded us of The Barenaked Ladies song “One week”.
Hold it now and watch the hoodwink
As I make you stop, think
You’ll think you’re looking at Aquaman
I summon fish to the dish.
We sincerely hope that Gypsy will come back and get back together with Cisco.
Caitlin Frost gets cold feet?
The most interesting storyline so far is the one of Caitlin Frost. Having lost her powers, she had powerful memory triggered that showed us that she had powers way before the accelerator exploded. And the one who apparently installed blocks on them is her dead dad who wasn’t dead? What a mystery we have to solve this season.
Trying to avoid the truth about her dad by excessively helping Cisco with his breakup, Ralph and Cisco forced her to take a look. What we find is that Caitlin’s mom helped fake the death certificate.
So this raises the following questions:
- Who is her dad?
- Where is he now?
- Is her dad a meta?
- What is her mother’s role in all this, besides the obvious death certificate art
- About the episodes where Caitlin visits her mom to see what can be done about the Killer Frost persona, did her mom know then already about Killer Frost?
- Who killed JFK? Oh wait, that’s not relevant for this article.
But so far we find the mystery of Killer Frost / Caitlin more interesting than the future disappearance of Barry. Also because Caitlin deserves to be a bit more in the spotlight after serving the show from day one.
The Big Bad
The big bad of this season of The Flash is called Cicada and the first encounter didn’t end so well. Cicada has a lot of powers in the comics but in this particular episode, it looked like he stole the powers of the meta’s, at least temporarily. And it made him superstrong and nearly invincible. It looks a bit like Sebastian Shaw from the Marvel Comics. He works as a janitor in his spare time apparently. We were pleasantly surprised by Cicada backing down after Excess yelled out “DAD!!”. Could this be the Achilles heel of the character. That he has lost a child and can’t bear to take anyone’s life when someone calls out his parent?
Let’s hope that they will flesh out his character a bit proper.
The Freak of The Week or Meta of the Week was Block. The FOTW formula grows a bit weary and we wonder why they keep dragging on with that particular formula. Sure, it’s fun to see Silver Age, Golden Age adversaries. But really, why not deviate from the formula and give us some proper development.
What did you think of this week’s episode? Do you have any idea who Caitlin’s dad is? And what of Excess, do you think her intentions are sincere? The Flash owes us a sincere backstory about Cicada, don’t u think?
