We watched Arrow season seven and colour us impressed with the intensity of this new episode.
We find Oliver in prison following last season’s confession of Oliver being the Green Arrow. He cut a deal where he got sent to jail and Team Arrow got to walk around free. While we still expect Oliver to be undercover of some sort, it is certainly not looking that way in this episode.
Arrow started as a show with flashbacks pushing plotlines and giving backgroud to some of Oliver’s decisions. Up until season 5, it worked quite well. Until it didn’t and the writers promised us different kind of flashbacks. Such as Team Arrow members getting their own flashbacks. And while that was a good idea, they never managed to make that work in our opinion. There just wasn’t enough to connect us with the other characters as they were too flat.
This season, the Arrow writers team has come up with flashforwards. So we see a mysterious man enter the island of Lian Yu, or what is left of it, looking for Robert Queen. Instead he finds Roy.
So the gimmick is that Arrow will try to establish character elements into the show by showing a future version.
“When you’re on a show for so long, the challenges are trying to tell new stories with your characters,” showrunner Beth Schwartz explains. But the new timeline, which picks up 20 years after the present day, has “just opened up a huge world for us, and the creativity just poured in. Now the stories are endless.”
After reading this, we thought: Hey, that’s gold…absolutely brilliant. That way they can go on for years to come. But wait a minute, if you establish a character in the future, that means that you will have to remain very consistent whilst working towards that future character. And at the same time, you will also have less flexibility just because we saw a lot of elements already blended into that character. While it seems like a brilliant idea at first, we are pretty sceptical to see how it plays out.
The New Green Arrow
While Oliver was in jail, a new Green Arrow rounded up the criminals. According to Wild Dog, crime rate was at an all time high after Oliver was sent to jail. Gee, we wonder why?
Ofcourse, the bigger question is, who is he? We have been reading fan theories about William being the new guy. He must have traveled from the future in that case. Which goes a little bit against the nature of the show.
Then the most obvious speculation was that it was Roy Harper dressed up as Arrow. Quite possible, he did move a little bit as The Green Arrow.
But why not go for an even crazier theory: It’s Robert Queen from Earth Two? He has come to right the wrongs for the death of his son. And taken over the mantle of Green Arrow as a hommage.
And please do not tell us that it is Tommy again underneath that mask. We have about had it with Tommy’s comebacks.

Elsewhere in Arrow
Digg visiting Oliver in jail, nice to see that the friendship is still going strong.
Felicity and William in witness protection and were found by Ricardo Diaz. Can’t wait to see Fake Green Arrow take down Diaz.
Earth Two Laurel’s press conference. Will be interesting to see the next showdown with Ricardo Diaz. From allies to enemies to Stockholm Syndrome to ending up trying to kill each other.
Roy Harper’s flashforward. Will he be more than that?
